RTOM DBS Dual Surface Practice Pad review
This is a review of the RTOM DBS Dual Surface Practice Pad. The one side is the classic Moongel material for strength and endurance, while the other is a new rubber pad to help you build your technique and speed.
I own an Evans, Prologix and several other pads but this is the one I reach for when I want to practice my rudiments or double strokes. If you are a drummer, and like playing rudiments this is 100% something you should add to your wish list. My hand speed has increased for my blast beats, and my drum fills are getting faster and tighter using it.
If you want to get faster playing the drums, playing rudiments and pushing yourself to a metronome is the best possible way to do this. I play a lot of blast beats in my metal band and need to keep my endurance up for live shows and recording new material at a high BPM.

IN 2 Months - Beg to Differ - Live band practice
Переглядів 5836 місяців тому
IN 2 Months are a skate punk band from Winnipeg Manitoba. This song was recorded live at a band jam using a Presonus Studiolive 32SC mixer. This was recorded live off the floor with no edits. This is one of our more poppy songs from the last album. I did this as a test to see what kind of sound quality we could get out of an extremally loud band practice. Thanks to my buddy Ryan from @dissoluti...

Should you upgrade your drumset?

I've been asked this by a few people lately so wanted to make a video on upgrading your kit or fixing up your old drum set. There are lots of ways to make your old set sound new again, but there are also some good reasons to go purchase a new kit. A new snare, hardware, or set of cymbals can sometimes be all you need. 3M Scotch-Brite scrubbing pads are fir better for sanding drums during the ckearciat stages. I worked in a cabinet shop for years. I built and repaired druns for over 30 years. When we discovered the 3M pads, it was a game changer. For clearcoat, I prefer wipe on poly if you aren't spraying the clear coat on.

    What do you think about practising double stroke on such low rebound surface?? Will it cause some tendencies issue on fingers or wrists??

    • @beyondbetrayal
      @beyondbetrayal 6 днів тому

      Hmmmm. That's a good question. I think it would be difficult but it would really build your strength and control over the strokes. I know for myself I NEED the rebound so I'd have a very hard time doing it. If you had tighter springs and got it working it would help transition to not using such a tight head which would be good.

    Nope, still dont know how you guys get this stuff working. I hook up my ekit, install asio4all, set everything to my realtek audio devices. Nothing. Audio doesnt work, bfdplayer vst doesnt recognize my ekit (works just fine on my pc without reaper), and it doesn't record my drum audio at all. (Infact it even excludes the rest of my pc's audio instead of sharing and stays that way even when i close reaper. I had to shut off my pc 3 times only to just give up on having any audio on my pc while trying to fix this.) I've even tried WASAPI, but all i ever get is feedback loops and there is no option to just simply record system audio. The ekit on reaper only works if i set it to midi, no audio or anything and no vst BFD recognition. Spent 4-5 hours and I've nearly thrown my keyboard at the wall just trying to figure any of this stuff out.

    • @beyondbetrayal
      @beyondbetrayal 26 днів тому

      Wish I could remote in and help ya man. This stuff has a bit of a learning curve but one's you figure it out it should be easy after. First step. Get the ekit working in the vst with midi. Even if you can't hear it you can see the drums hit when you hit the pads. That part has to work or your out of luck. After that you can spend time clicking on the drums while screwing around with audio and not getting up and down constantly. I have some concerns when you install all these drivers and audio filters as they make large changes. Might be easier to reinstall windows if you screw it up bad enough. If you can hear the drums in waveout while hitting the pads there is latency but that's what your computer audio will use. If the audio works in thr VST without reaper then open it in reaper and confirm hits are registering. Same thing goes again. It's 99% an audo routing issue.

    • @spritefan10
      @spritefan10 26 днів тому

      @@beyondbetrayal Appreciate the reply. I was able to bandaid a solution together. Hopefully this might help someone else out too. It isn't perfect, but with a latency of 2 ms, I can't be too upset. So let's say what I did first with the VST. So the VST was set to the master track, not track 1. So setting it to track 1 fixed that. Next, let's just get it out the door, asio HATES me. For some reason, it will not work no matter what I do. It's probably because the soundcard I have is embedded into my mobo instead of having an actual designated one, thus needing to use realtek for all my sound-based needs. So what I did was use WASAPI set my audio device to "Stereo Mix (Realtek(R)Audio) for the input. This pretty much just uses whatever the system sends to whatever default speakers the pc uses for headphones/auxillary input mostly. As for the output, I set it to Speakers (Realtek(R)Audio). DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU ARE RECORDING AUDIO (ONLY USE IT FOR WHEN YOU ARM THE TRACK FOR CREATING MIDIS). IF YOU TRY TO RECORD AUDIO, THIS WILL CREATE A FEEDBACK LOOP AND DEAFEN YOUR EARS! If you do want to record audio, you have to set it to a separate device like a tv or monitor's built-in speakers for the output. However it worked fine for me when needing to make midis. Since wasapi had horrible latency, I set realtek device to have incredibly high studio quality 192000 hz and matched it in the samplerate. To fix the issue with not hearing the rest of my pc, I set it to shared mode in wasapi. ANOTHER THING asio hates. I'm Still figuring out alot of things like quantizing the midi so not every note is a 1/64th note and how to adjust/create notes in the midi editor, but other than that, atleast I'm not throwing my keyboard at the wall anymore.

    Yooo. I know this is an old video but i wanted to ask if you think 290 bpm is possible with a relatively loose bass skin? My springs are maxxed out and my beater is at more than 45 degrees (almost closer to the footboard than the actuall drum), but i feel like i just cant get enough power at around 230 double strokes. Moving the beater closer to the drum skin or loosening the spring just gives me even less power

    • @beyondbetrayal
      @beyondbetrayal Місяць тому

      Oh ya. If you work at it anything is possible. 290 is crazy fast though. And in reality, the faster you are playing the less distance from the head you have to rebound. Same goes for single strokes on the hands. Mics and a good compressor or triggers are the way around that. Not many people hit 290 on the feet without a trigger.

    • @Evixus-gr1dm
      @Evixus-gr1dm Місяць тому

      @@beyondbetrayal but if I put the beaters closer to the head then I basically have no velocity towards the bass drum when striking, meaning even less rebound, and even less power. I'm currently at 220-240 ich after 3 days of using the a21 or any longboat for that matter and, I'm just worried because at about 230 the power on the second stroke is barely there

    • @beyondbetrayal
      @beyondbetrayal Місяць тому

      @@Evixus-gr1dm That's where spring tension comes into play. it all works in harmony, spring tension, head tension, beater distance, and practice.

    • @Evixus-gr1dm
      @Evixus-gr1dm 29 днів тому

      @@beyondbetrayal but my springs are maxxed. Are you suggesting loosening them? I tried that but that just makes the pedal not respond quick enough

    • @beyondbetrayal
      @beyondbetrayal 29 днів тому

      @Evixus-gr1dm my springs are about mid tension.... but I make up for that with head tension as I need the rebound. That rebound allows me to "catch" the pedal and swing it back, creating momentum. Hitting 240/250 using doubles is quite easy for me like this. I'm not suggesting you do anything. Everyone plays differently. Another thing you can try to play with is beater height. Or get beater weights. They all change the feel of the pedal quite a bit. So think beater height, weights, the beater itself, spring tension, head tension, distance from head, and the pedal itself. Each one will have an effect on another. If I adjust one setting, changing another may respond differently. It's a balance and takes a while to get used to after changing, too. At the end of the day, though, trying to hit those speeds is going to require changes to your velocity.

    Pffft. Drums are not tuned to musical notes & they're not tuned to any rules except for how they sound to the drummer & the particular venue. Drummers use their own ears.

    • @beyondbetrayal
      @beyondbetrayal 2 місяці тому

      Incorrect. Anything that makes a frequency is technically a musical note. Many pro drummers and techs do this. No ones forcing you to do this, but when you actually tune your drum correctly (without a tunebot) it registers as a note. This makes it easier and more accurate than your ear 100% of the time. Your venues and sound guys will thank you.
